Welcome to Year 2. We hope you all had a lovely summer, we are so impressed with how well the Year 2 children have come back and settled into their new classes. Please check here for updates on our school learning throughout the year.

Kenya Day


Last week Year 2 had a Kenya Day where they took part in different activities learning about ways of life in Kenya. The day started with listening to the Kenyan National Anthem and then singing the British National Anthem. Then they got to paint African Dan masks that are used to keep bad spirits away, explored African patterns with pastels, tasted different fruits that you can find in Africa and also took part in a tribal dance. All the children thoroughly enjoyed themselves and learnt a lot of new facts about Kenya. It was lovely to finish the day with an assembly to the parents to share with them what they had done and learnt throughout the day.

This term we will be working on;

  • Reading and writing numbers to 100
  • Place value - comparing and ordering numbers
  • Addition and subtraction of one and two digit numbers
  • Word problems

The children will participate in a weekly problem solving activity ( The Big Solve) and will also enjoy a daily fun Magic Maths activity.




The children are regularly assessed against a National Benchmark and from this they are directed to select a book of their choice from their appropriate level.
The children are expected to read at home five times a week and are rewarded for doing so. When your child has read at home please leave a dated comment in their reading record. You can also write any questions or concerns in the reading record as this is checked daily by a teacher or LSA.

Writing and Phonics

The children spend 15-20 minutes everyday on phonics. Each phonic session is fast, fun and multisensory and specific to their individual learning needs.
In their Literacy lessons and across the curriculum they will be learning to write recounts, reports linked to topic work and extended stories. 
There are weekly handwriting sessions and the children are encouraged to try to join their letters in their independent writing.

The children will take part in regular short keyword and spelling sessions. It is especially important for your child to not only learn to spell these words individually but also be able to spell them correctly in their extended writing. Please encourage your child to practise these in sentences at home.

Speaking and Listening

We will encourage the children to develop their speaking and listening skills with a weekly discussion box (The Talk box) that will be taken home by a different child each week.  


We will be learning about 'Uses of Everyday Materials' through investigation and will be linking this to our DT topic and creating our own bridges out of different materials.
To support our Science and DT work, we would be extremely grateful for a voluntary conribution of £2.50 


Foundation Subjects

Through our topic of Peru and the Amazon Rainforest we will be comparing and contrasting our own locality, exploring the people and traditions of Peru and learning a few Spanish words and phrases!  

Year 2 had a great day at Bristol Zoo doing a nocturnal workshop and then some free time to explore!

Last year we went to @ Bristol to learn about animation. We had lots of fun in our animation workshop and investigating the rest of the museum.
